Title Impact of COVID-19 pandemic–related measures on testing for hepatitis B in British Columbia, Canada: an interrupted time series analysis
Description

Background: Measures to address SARS-CoV-2 transmission led to disruption of health services internationally.

Purpose: We assessed the impact of COVID-19 pandemic–related measures on hepatitis B (HBV) testing in British Columbia, Canada.

Method: We used interrupted time series analysis with BC COVID-19 Cohort data to estimate changes in HBV testing following the declaration of an emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Results: HBV surface antigen testing was 15.6% lower than predicted in June–December 2020 and 24.1% lower than predicted in 2022, HBV DNA testing was 11.9% lower than predicted in June–December 2020 and 11.7% lower than predicted in 2022, and e-antigen testing was 5.3% lower than predicted in June–December 2020 and 7.4% lower than predicted in 2022.

Conclusion: Pandemic-related disruptions were associated with a decrease in HBV testing relative to the predicted level in the short term, and testing remained lower than expected over a longer period.
